The public is invited for an evening with the cosmos on Saturday, April 26 – starting at approximately 7:30 pm and ending around 1:00 am – at Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center, just north of the entrance to the Joshua Tree National Park at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms. The constellation of Leo the Lion dominates the sky, surrounded by harder-to-see constellations of Hydra, Sextans, Cancer, and Lynx. Mars and Jupiter are both shining brighter than any star at almost opposite ends of the sky. Viewing Mars and Jupiter in same night should be a treat for any planetary enthusiast. Subtle surface and cloud-top detail will be visible on both planets. Guests are encouraged to bring binoculars and telescopes to this free event. Pads are provided for telescope setup, and STL volunteers will make every effort to assist you as needed in setting up and using your equipment. Everyone should bring snacks, water bottles, chairs, and a small flashlight (red lens, no white lights please) and dress for unpredictable desert weather. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets and no smoking allowed on the STL campus, and visitors must carry out all trash. For more information call 760-367-7222, visit the STL web site at www.skysthelimit29.org .
