There are so many trails in Joshua Tree National Park. But sometimes there’s too much of what you’d think was a good thing. Ranger Pam Tripp tells about an effort to improve the trails in the Skull Rock area…
Joshua Tree National Park is considering the construction of a new interpretative loop trail from the Skull Rock parking area. The primary goal of the new trail is to decrease multiple trails into a single loop trail to protect the natural resources in this highly used area. Currently, there 107 off-trail routes, more commonly referred to as social trails, that are impacting the natural resources. Joshua Tree National Park staff are preparing an Environmental Assessment to analyze both the positive and negative impacts associated with this project and would like to invite the public to review and comment on the proposed trail. Beginning July 1, 2014 the draft Environmental Assessment will be available for review at the Joshua Tree NP library, located at our headquarters in Twentynine Palms. Comments should be submitted no later than July 15, 2014. For more information please contact Luke Sabala, Branch Chief Physical Scientist at 760 367-5563.
