Landers residents agree that the Post Office there is the de facto town center, meeting place, transportation hub and community grapevine. It’s certainly the place where you can meet all kinds. Reporter Mike Lipsitz brings us this story that left these involved a bit rattled …
Stick around Landers Post Office long enough and you’ll eventually meet everyone in town. Nearly all are friendly, but every great once-in-a-while you run across a real snake…a sidewinder to be precise. That’s what happened on a recent Thursday morning when a customer, a young woman, encountered the serpent under the mail collection box just inside the front doors. Landers Postmaster JT, Jeri Tomes, made two calls immediately following the discovery. First she called county animal control and then she called the main Yucca Valley Post Office to brief the supervisor there. She could recall nothing in the postal regulations about snakes in the post office. JT said it took animal control all of about five minutes to arrive. It was just a few minutes more before the animal control officer had the rattlesnake in her snare then unceremoniously decapitated it in the parking lot.
