SHERIFF’S SWAT TEAM CALLED TO TWENTYNINE PALMS STAND-OFF MONDAY

The Sheriff’s Department sent in a SWAT team Monday following a report of a man who barricaded himself inside his home after stabbing a woman in the hand. According to a Sheriff’s report, deputies were sent to a home in the 6500 block of Oasis Avenue in Twentynine Palms about 5:30 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance, in which people were arguing and items were being thrown inside the apartment. The occupant, Peter Walik, 36, barricaded himself inside with a knife and told deputies to shoot him. At the same time, a woman called Sheriff’s Dispatch from another home and said she had been stabbed and was bleeding. A deputy determined the woman was Walik’s girlfriend and mother of his child, and that Walik had stabbed her. She was taken to a local hospital and treated for her injuries. Meanwhile, Walik had barricaded himself inside his apartment by placing furniture in front of doors and windows. The Special Weapons and Tactics team was called in and after several hours of negotiations, Walik eventually left the apartment. After a short struggle, he was arrested for investigation of spouse abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. After being treated for his injuries from breaking a window and the altercation, Walik was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $100,000.
