A missing 87 year old woman was found in only a few hours thanks to a local Sheriff’s canine.

Yesterday (November 20), at approximately 11:30 a.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies from the Morongo Basin Station responded to a report of a missing person in the 6500 block of Mojave Avenue in Twentynine Palms. Maria Nieves, an 87 year old with a cognitive disability, was reported as missing and last seen at her residence two hours prior.

Deputies deployed their K9 unit, which includes Deputy Nathan Bakker and K9 Naji, who used a pillowcase belonging to Nieves to track her scent. She was located more than a mile from her home near the intersection of Twentynine Palms Highway and Adobe Road, and returned to her family unharmed.
