Late last month, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department conducted outreach to the unhoused community here in the Morongo Basin.

The Sheriff’s Community Service & Reentry Division, Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team or (H.O.P.E.) conducted an outreach operation during which they contacted people experiencing homelessness to offer them housing, medical services, and treatment.

While in our community on September 20, the H.O.P.E. Team contacted 54 individuals, 33 of whom were referred to programs for assistance. Ten people were connected with follow-up professional services. The H.O.P.E. Team also contacted two families, and helped them connect with housing.

According to information from this year’s Point in Time Count conducted in January, San Bernardino county’s homeless population grew by 42 individuals for a total of 4,237.

Yucca Valley saw their homelessness decrease by 15 percent, and Joshua Tree also saw a decrease, by 31%. Twentynine Palms saw a notable increase of homelessness as it was up 67%.
