SHERIFFS HONORED FOR FINDING JUVENILE IN THE DESERT

Morongo Basin Sheriff’s deputies were honored for their successful effort in locating a juvenile who had gone missing in the open desert. Four officers and a canine were involved in the search and rescue effort, and Morongo Basin Deputies were presented with the Sheriff’s Lifesaving Award. In January of 2021, Deputy Sellers, Deputy Hodgins, and Detective Henry with the assistance of Deputy Girard and his canine Dare, responded to a report of a high risk missing juvenile in the 61000 block of Elwood Place in Joshua Tree. The officers located the juvenile’s shoe tracks, and followed them into open desert terrain to the base of a mountain. When the shoe tracks could no longer be followed, deputies began a systematic search of the mountain and located the juvenile at the base of a 60 ft cliff. Deputies provided medical aid to the juvenile who had sustained major injuries. A helicopter rescue was conducted, and the juvenile was transported to a local hospital. The Morongo Basin Sheriff’s deputies were honored with the Sheriff’s Lifesaving award for their rescue search efforts.
