SHERIFF’S HELICOPTER RESCUES LOST HIKER NEAR 49 PALMS CANYON

A New York man was rescued by a Sheriff’s helicopter while he was hiking near 49 Palms Canyon in Twentynine Palms Tuesday afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Department, Terrence Ohalloran called about 4:40 p.m. to report he had been hiking but was lost. He said he had a bottle of water with him. The Sheriff’s Department sent its helicopter, 40King, to search for Ohalloran, and by using the GPS coordinates from his phone, he was located in a canyon about 1 ½ miles from the nearest road. The helicopter landed nearby and Deputy Brad Heard hiked to Ohalloran to guide him out of the area, but Ohalloran said he was unable to walk out of the canyon. So then Ohalloran was guided to the top of a large boulder. Deputy Doug Brimmer lowered the helicopter over Ohalloran, and Heard helped him into the helicopter. Ohalloran was flown out and turned over to Deputy Wayne Greer.
