Nearly 400 4-wheel drive vehicles, dirt bikes, quads, dune buggies, and other all-terrain vehicles participated in the 36th annual Desert Run in Johnson Valley Saturday. Sponsored by the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue, the family-friendly event drew 389 paid entries, with riders as young as a year old. The 20-mile course challenged drivers with sand dunes, steep hills, and of course, lots of rock crawling. Poker run winners Sam Adams, Allan Baird, and Larry Wombles won cash prizes. Larry Coy won $2,256 in the 50/50 drawing. The grand prize raffle of a custom wrap by Empire was won by Abner Aguirre. Preliminary estimates are that the search and rescue raised more than $12,000 in its biggest fund-raising event of the year.
