The Sheriff’s Department has released more information about the horrific incident in which a Joshua Tree woman was mauled and killed by four pitbull dogs on her property. The victim, Lana Bergman, 70, of the 59500 block of Sunflower Drive, was home alone about 10 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, when she was attacked by the dogs, who belonged to a family living temporarily in a bus on the property. Lana Bergman died shortly after she was attacked. Deputies received multiple tips that the owners of the dogs were wanted by the state of Oregon. Deputies investigated the tips and found they were not true. Child and Family Services determined the children were healthy, and they were allowed to stay with their parents. The investigation is ongoing and a report will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office to determine whether charges should be filed against the dogs’ owners. Anyone with additional information should call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
