Nine months into the job, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus will run for office with a challenger on the ballot. In June, he will take on challenger Clifton Lee Harris in a bid to keep his seat. Dicus was appointed in July to lead the Sheriff’s Department 30 years into his career there. Harris is a former deputy for both San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Both say they want to improve relations between law enforcement and the Black community. Harris, if elected in the June 7 primary, would be the first Black sheriff in the county’s 212-year history. For him, improving race relations begins with accountability within the Sheriff’s Department. Dicus wants to improve on relationship-building efforts within the Black community and continue his focus programs to help former inmates transition back into society.
