Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for the body of a woman who is presumed to have died at Amboy Crater earlier this month. This past weekend, the Sheriff’s search and rescue team, including search dogs, went back to Amboy Crater to look for Susan Schmeirer, 65, whose husband, William Schmeirer, 64, was found dead at the crater on June 16. The couple had left their home in Williamsburg, Virginia, May 27, and were supposed to have checked into a hotel in Palm Springs for a week beginning June 2. Their car was discovered in the Amboy Crater parking lot June 13 and they had not been heard from since June 3. The couple’s children hired a drone company which conducted fly-overs of the crater and identified areas of interest for the search and rescue team. Searchers went out last weekend to continue the search for Susan Schmeirer, but by 10:30 ground temperatures were 130 degrees, and the dogs were called off the search. By 2 p.m. the air temperature was 117 degrees and the ground temperature was 165 degrees. The rough terrain and weather disabled two of the Sheriff’s Department off-highway search and rescue vehicles. Susan Schmeirer still has not been located.
