SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT HAS SAFETY TIPS FOR DISTRICT PARENTS AND MOTORISTS

With summer break now over and students returning to school, the Morongo Unified School District has issued an announcement on student safety. In Part 2 of this two-part story, school District Superintendent Tom Baumgarten outlines how district parents and Morongo Basin motorists can help the district improve student safety…

Here’s what you can do to help ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn in a safe, secure environment. Drive safely in school zones and near bus stops. A ticket for illegally passing a bus can cost up to $671 in the state of California. More importantly, an accident can cost the life of a student and be a tragedy for all involved. Highway 62 is especially dangerous; I (Baumgarten) have attended five funerals over the last several years for students killed while crossing the highway. Please do your best to look out for students crossing the highway. Also, model patience as you drop your child off at school, road rage is a lesson that should not be displayed in a school parking lot. Put the phone down in school parking lots and drop-off zones. Unfortunately, students have been struck by distracted drivers right in front of their schools. Thank you for investing in our future and keeping our school zones accident-free. Your safe driving puts a smile on our spectacular students’ faces.
