SCHOOL STARTS TODAY, TAKE CARE AT BUS STOPS AND SCHOOLS

Students go back to school this morning. The start of the new school year will bring an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic around schools and bus stops. Watch for children stepping from behind parked cars, and getting on and off school busses. Managing editor Tami Roleff has other school safety tips…

Here are some pedestrian safety tips around schools: Don’t walk while you’re distracted by phones or headphones; don’t cross the street in the middle of the block; watch out for careless drivers; and walk on the sidewalks or the shoulders and not in the road. For students who ride the bus, arrive at the bus stop early; cross in front of the bus, never behind it; and look for traffic when crossing in front of the bus.  Parents and guardians should make sure the school has their child’s most up-to-date contact information. For drivers, plan your trips to avoid congested school zones when schools are starting and at the end of the school day, especially during the first few weeks of school, when parents and students are getting used to the new routine.
