Schools in the Morongo Unified School District open Monday after a long summer vacation. Whether you are walking to school or taking the bus, Z107.7 News wants you to get there safely. Reporters Mike Lipsitz and Rebecca Havely have some safety tips. We start with Mike Lipsitz on school bus safety…
Here are some safety tips for children who ride the school bus.
The danger zone is the 10-foot wide space all around the bus and where children are in the most danger of being hit. Students should stay 10 feet away while waiting for, or after exiting, the bus.
Never cross the street behind the bus.
Take five giant steps from the front of the bus before crossing the street so the driver can see you.
Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it’s OK to board.
Use the handrails to avoid falls.
If you leave anything near the bus, never return to the bus to get it. The driver may not see you and may begin moving the bus.
If you drop something near the bus, do not pick it up. Instead tell the driver and wait for instructions.
Stop, look, and listen for cars before crossing the street.
Parents, teach your children to follow these common sense practices to make school bus transportation safer.
And now reporter Rebecca Havely shares some safety tips for students who walk to school…
For many students their school day begins and ends with a walk. To ensure that they arrive to school and home again safely follow these safety tips:
Before you cross a street, stop at the curb or edge of the road.
Cross the street only at street corners and marked cross walks.
Stop, look and listen for oncoming traffic. Stop and look to your left, then right, then left again, to be certain no cars are coming. If you see a car. wait until it passes before you cross the street.
If there’s no sidewalk and you need to walk on the side of the road, face the oncoming traffic so you can see any car that might go out of control.
Most importantly, never dart out into traffic.
Share these steps with your students before their back-to-school adventures begin.
