The physical closure of high schools statewide due to the COVID-19 outbreak has led to many questions from students, including how seniors will be graduating, how grades will be assigned for distance-learning classes, and how those grades will be viewed by college admissions boards. California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced Wednesday, April 1, that both the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California State Board of Education (SBE) have issued new guidance on graduation requirements and grading for California high school seniors. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has the story…
The new guidance from the California Department of Education addresses possible alternative grading criteria for current high school students, the minimum college entrance requirements for high school seniors, and provides admissions updates for higher education for current seniors. Through the new guidance, many colleges will accept alternative grading systems of credit/no-credit or pass/fail grading without impact on student grade point averages. Flexibility on testing requirements, timing of transcripts, and financial aid considerations have also been extended for California students.
