SCHOOL DISTRICT HIT WITH LAPTOP COMPUTER SHORTAGE

A Morongo Unified School District laptop giveaway event earlier this week did not go as planned. Many school sites ran out of laptops early on in the giveaway, much to the dismay of students and parents of students who took to Facebook to vent their frustrations. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has more on the current situation and what the school district is doing about it…

MUSD placed an order in July for 5,000 digital devices for students, but the order was unexpectedly canceled after President Trump halted all U.S. business with the overseas company. The school district immediately placed a new order with a new company (Hewlett-Packard), the projected delivery date being before the first day of school. However, due to extremely high demand for the digital devices, the delivery date was postponed to September and recently again to October. According to MUSD Superintendent Tom Baumgarten, the school district is currently dismantling school computer labs and any other electronic resources available to distribute for student use, but is still around 600 devices short of meeting its goal.

MUSD Board Trustee Karalee Hargrove reached out to Assemblyman Chad Mayes and State Superintendent of Schools Tony Thurmond Wednesday seeking assistance in acquiring the last few hundred much-needed devices for MUSD students.
