SCHOOL DISTRICT GIVES OUT 66,000 MEALS IN ONE DAY

The Morongo Unified School District began a Grab-and-Go meal program for students on March 16 to ensure that all students had continued access to free daily meals during the COVID-19 school closure. On Friday, April 10, the school district distributed a record 66,000 meals to students. Reporter Andrew Dieleman tells us how they did it…

During the school district spring break holiday from April 13-17, nutritional staff and other essential staff were off, meaning the school district Grab-and-Go meal program was unavailable. In anticipation of the temporary closure, the school district ramped up its Grab-and-Go meal program. On April 10, each of the district’s 15 school site provided a week’s worth of food for every child. A total of 66,036 meals were distributed at a rate of 550 meals per minute. The Grab-and-Go food distribution resumed April 20 and will continue throughout the remainder of the closure.
