More than a year after discussions began about using solar energy, the Morongo Unified School District Board of Directors will hold a ground-breaking ceremony tomorrow morning, Wednesday, August 12, at 9 at Twentynine Palms High School. The solar photovoltaic system by NextEra will generate 3.7 megawatts of solar power from shaded parking structures at elementary, middle, junior, and high schools throughout the school district. More than 12,000 solar modules will produce enough energy to meet 80 percent of the schools’ energy needs. The school district signed a 20-year agreement with NextEra that includes the financing, development, construction, and operation of the solar projects. Construction of all 15 systems is anticipated to be completed by October 15.
