SCHOOL BOARD REVIEWS BUDGET, HONORS EMPLOYEES

The Morongo Unified School District Board of Education recognized retirees and employees with long service to the district at its Tuesday meeting. Reporter Dan Stork says they also approved a draft budget…

The June 2 meeting of the MUSD Board of Education began with recognition of employees who have reached service milestones of 20 to 35 years with the District. You can find their names in this story at z1077fm.com.

In contrast to the tone of recent meetings, almost all was sweetness and light, as employees, administration, and Board all relaxed after reaching tentative contract agreements.

The actual agendized business of the meeting was dispatched in about seven minutes. The Board approved a draft budget for the next school year. This budget, which the assistant superintendent had gone over in detail during an early workshop, runs about $87 million, about a 10 percent increase over the current year. Losses in revenue from federal and local sources were more than made up by Prop 30 funds and boom revenues from the state. The budget does not reflect the new employee union contracts, which will show up in the final budget.

Assistant Superintendent Sharon Flores pointed to clouds on the horizon for education funding in the state and in the Morongo Basin: the expiration of Prop 30, the lack of assurance that boom times will continue, and the continuing decline in school enrollments.

Board member Ed Will questioned why there were no local firms among those awarded contracts for roofing, paving, and flooring projects. The answer: There were no local bidders.
