SCHOOL BOARD MEETS: WANTS TO AVOID BITTER TEACHER CONTRACT DISPUTES

2

The Morongo Unified School District’s Board of Education is already looking for ways to avoid last year’s protracted—and sometimes bitter—contract negotiations with its teachers. Future contract negotiations between the Morongo Unified School District and its teachers may be about to get easier. Or at least less frequent. In the wake of last year’s lengthy dispute over pay and working conditions, the Board of Education tonight will consider a so-called “sunshine agreement” proposing, among other things, that traditional one-year contracts be extended by two years.
The idea would still have to be explored by representatives of the district and the Morongo Teachers’ Association. If approved, however, the document could form the basis of this year’s negotiations for a new contract good until 2020.
In other business, the board will consider a plan designed to save money by encouraging certain employees to take early retirement.
Tonight’s school board meeting gets underway 7 p.m. at Palm Vista Elementary School in Twentynine Palms.
