SCHOOL BOARD MEETS: TEACHER PROTESTS, CHARTER SCHOOL APPLICATION

The Morongo Unified School Board of trustees meets tonight. The Board is expecting a presence from teachers in a contract impasse working only required hours and a charter school petition consideration. Reporter David Haldane takes a closer look…
Teachers in the Morongo Unified School District are hoping to see lots of blue at tonight’s Board of Education meeting. That’s the color they’ve asked parents to wear in support of a “work to rule” action the Morongo Teachers’ Association called last week to dramatize its desire for a contract. Union and district negotiators have been in mediation since reaching an impasse in January. In the meantime, the teachers’ association is asking educators to work only the hours for which they are contracted and not a minute more. Association president Terri Weitz claims 90 percent compliance, causing major problems at lots of schools. Doug Weller, the district’s superintendent for human resources, on the other hand, says the results have been mixed. The truth may be evident at tonight’s meeting.
In other business, the board will consider a controversial charter petition by the Joshua Tree Arts and Technology Academy.
Tonight’s meeting starts 7 p.m. at Joshua Tree Elementary School on Sunburst Drive.
