SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS ADVANCED PLACEMENT WORKSHOP

The Morongo Unified School District Board of Education meeting was split between workshops and regular business. Today, reporter Dan Stork tells about the Advanced Placement workshop…

A second workshop preceding the regular meeting of the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education was about Advanced Placement courses. The pass rate of MUSD students on AP exams runs about ½ of state, national, and regional averages. Many reasons were put forward for this:
• Overly large AP class sizes
• Letting students into AP classes who are incapable of meeting their demands
• Not teaching to the known requirements of the AP exams

A proposal to remedy these problems included:
• Early identification of students not up to the AP challenge
• Better teacher training
• Establishment of an Honors track between College Prep and AP offerings
