Last night’s protest was only one component of the Morongo Unified School District board of trustee’s regular board meeting. The board met in person, fully masked and socially distanced, with no live stream of the meeting. Reporter Cassidy Taylor has more from the meeting that lasted more than three hours total…
In action items, the board unanimously approved to authorize requests from an executive search firm to assist in recruiting and hiring a new district Superintendent. Doug Weller will fulfill his position as Interim Superintendent for the district until the end of his contract in 2022. The board also accepted the Memorandum of Understanding between the district and the CSEA for a new Custodial Trades Foreman job and adopted a board policy on the district’s Independent Study program.
The board also began the district’s annual review of student achievement plans for each school site. Representatives from Landers, Joshua Tree, Oasis, and Morongo Valley Elementary Schools, and black Roch High School, outlined their detailed plans to improve student performance in English Language Arts and mathematics, as well as improve graduation rates, increase community and parent involvement in school activities, and decrease student discipline overall.
Lastly, Assistant Superintendent Amy Woods reported that 2,200 students took part in the district’s Summer Learning Program. Woods thanked all students and staff members who took part in the program.
