SCHOOL BOARD GETS UPDATE FROM COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE

The Morongo Unified School District Board of Trustees reorganized at last night’s meeting, electing new officers for the next term. New Board President Hillary Slotta, Board Clerk Kerri Condley, Board Legislative Representative Karalee Hargove, Board Secretary Tom Baumgarten, and Representative for County Committee on School District Organization John Cole accepted their new positions last night. At last night’s meeting, the MUSD Board of Trustees received an update from Copper Mountain College Superintendent/President Dr. Darren Otten on the partnership between the school District and the college, discussing current projects and proposing possible future projects to consider. The board also held a work study session on the district’s first interim financial report to ensure the district can meet its financial obligations. The board was also treated to a holiday performance from a choir of Joshua Tree Elementary School students.

The board also recognized Joshua Tree Elementary School for receiving its recent second consecutive Positive Behavior PBIS award and held a second work study session on board communication to ensure board members receive and distribute information in accordance with the Brown Act. Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Amy Woods gave a report on the school district’s gradual improvement of student performance levels, and decreased absences and suspension rates. Finally, the board reviewed five proposed school district policies. After some concerns regarding the verbiage of the policies was brought up, the board discussed holding a workshop to further review and amend the policies before they are accepted.
