At last night’s meeting, the board heard a report from Assistant Superintendent Amy Woods outlining in detail the district’s proposal for an in-person summer school program for transitional kindergarten-12th grade students. If approved, the program would use in-person leaning to both socially integrate students and assist students having difficulties meeting district education standards. Woods also reported on the few in-person learning programs going on in the district; including special education cohorts and some in-person tutoring.

Woods also discussed the district’s “learning hub” and “stable group” pilot programs (beginning Friday, March 26), that will offer in-person assistance to students having difficulty with the district’s distance learning programs. Lastly, Woods treated the board to video presentations from Onaga Elementary School’s “Read Across America” celebration and Yucca Valley Elementary School’s third-grade presentation on becoming meteorologists.

The board then heard an athletic report from Director of Secondary Curriculum Dustin Howard, who outlined the number of student athletes enrolled in athletic programs, current athletic programs undergoing outdoor practice, and team games that have taken place. The Yucca Valley High School football program was recently suspended when three individuals (two staff and one student) tested positive for COVID-19, initiating a mandatory quarantine and testing of all staff and players.

The board also adopted the 2021-2022 sunshine proposal between the district and the California School Employees Association; approved revisions to the 2020 Student Achievement Plans for Twentynine Palms High School and Yucca Valley Elementary School; held a public hearing on interfund borrowing; renewed the district’s mail room equipment lease through 2026; voted to approve the use of the Twentynine Palms Junior High School football field and parking lot for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show; and continued discussions on the district’s superintendent position in closed session; there was no public report.
