SCHOOL BOARD DECLINES PARTISAN SUPPORT OF PENDING BILL

Before a sparse audience, the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education dispatched its agenda quickly. Reporter Dan Stork reports that there was one debated issue…
By a vote of 2-2, with one abstention, the MUSD Board of Education declined to register support for Assembly Bill 2372, which purports to close a tax avoidance loophole available to corporations. Karalee Hargrove, who proposed the resolution of support, and who was joined in support by Ron Palmer, sees AB 2372 as a way to get more money for schools. Donna Munoz characterized the bill as partisan, and fears it would weaken Proposition 13 unduly; Ed Will joined her in opposing the support resolution. Chris Proudfoot, who abstained, saw the discussion as too political to be fit for discussion by the Board.
In an early session, Interim Superintendent Tom Baumgarten briefed the board on the programs and status of Hope Academy, in preparation for the five-year renewal of its charter, upon which the Board will be asked to pass.
Board members wondered why a resolution to authorize payment for refreshments at a reception celebrating the opening of administrative offices at Twentynine Palms High School was on the agenda. Baumgarten and Assistant Superintendent Sharon Flores explained it was on a technicality, because the reception is open to the public, and is not strictly an intramural event.
