SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES FOOD BANK AT FORMER JOSHUA TREE SCHOOL

The Morongo Unified School District board of Trustees unanimously agreed to bring a community food bank to the old Joshua Tree Elementary School property at last night’s meeting. The board also discussed the possibility of adding several other uses for the property, including moving the school district offices to the site and creating both a creating a professional development center and a parent resource center.

Superintendent Tom Baumgarten announced that the 29 Palms Band of Mission Indians has agreed to donate up to $100,000 to the school district to promote the pursuit of a future school district improvement bond. The board also appointed Amy Woods to replace Dr. Deborah Turner, who will be retiring effective June 30.

The board honored 36 district teachers and classified employees who have spent 20, 25, 30, and even 35 years working for the district. Later in the meeting, the board also received an update on negotiations between the school district ant the Morongo Teacher’s Association and approved the installation of new flooring and repainting at several District sites.
