SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES ELECTIONS BY DISTRICT

The city of Twentynine Palms, town of Yucca Valley, and Morongo Unified School District have all recently received letters from a lawyer threatening legal action unless they changed the way council and board members are elected, from “at large” elections to “district” elections. The school board held a closed session meeting Tuesday to discuss the issue. Superintendent Tom Baumgarten said the board voted 4 to 1, with Chris Proudfoot dissenting, to approve the change to district-based elections. Among the points Proudfoot raised for voting against the measure, he said it was unfair to voters because instead of being able to vote for two to three candidates each election, residents will be allowed to vote for only one.
