The Morongo Unified School District is joining with several other organizations to offer a community back-to-school day. Backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away to students on Friday, August 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The healthcare district will have its mobile medical unit on site to give students all the vaccinations they need in order to attend school. The backpacks are free. Students should bring their insurance card for the immunizations, which may be covered by their insurance company. There will also be information available about housing and preventing eviction for families; information on programs for on sexual assault services and for those suffering from domestic violence; and information about transitional age youth and family service programs. The event will be held at the Joshua Tree Sportsman’s Club on Sunburst Avenue in Joshua Tree.
Joshua Tree Lighthouse Christian Center will give away back-to-school backpacks to children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade on Saturday, August 10. The backpacks will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 a.m. at the church, 5475 Sunburst St. in Joshua Tree. Drawings will be held to give away a brand new bicycle for a boy and a girl. There will also be a special kids’ movie and games. The fire department will have a fire truck on site. All children must be accompanied by a parent.
