Scammers posing as SCE reps are threatening disconnection, demanding immediate payment

Southern California Edison is warning customers about the risk of scammers, who are continuing to come up with new tactics to defraud customers. A new one making the rounds involves a caller posing as an SCE representative, threatening the customer with disconnection and the removal of their electric meter unless they make an immediate payment.

SCE wants to remind everyone that they never ask for payments over the phone or call customers about an immediate service disconnection.

Although anyone can fall prey to victimization, SCE says that scammers most frequently target the elderly, non-native English speakers, and small businesses.

To protect against these scans, SCE says to pay your bill through these verified methods:

  • Pay with a card or digital wallet on sce.com/billpay.
  • Pay by phone by calling 1-800-950-2356.
  • Pay by mail with a check or money order.
  • Pay in person at an Authorized Payment Agency near you.

If you know of someone who you think may be susceptible to convincing phone calls telling them that their service is in danger of being disconnected, let them know about the scam and that they should always call SCE and law enforcement if they feel like they have been a target of a scam.
