For almost 50 years, our communities have used more water than could be replaced naturally. The practice has put some areas in “overdraft.” What does that mean for us now, and how will it affect our water forecast for the next 50 years? Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us where to learn the answers to these questions and others…
“Water for the Morongo Basin: The Next 50 Years,” is the title of a Desert-Wise Living presentation Saturday, September 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center on the highway in Yucca Valley. Mojave Water Agency General Manager Tom McCarthy is keynote speaker at this free morning seminar. On Saturday, McCarthy will provide background and perspective on the future of water in the Morongo Basin. Light refreshments from Boo’s Organic Oven will be provided during an informal reception, followed by a short presentation in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act.

The Morongo Basin Conservation Association, or MBCA, hosts the Desert-Wise Living series; this year marks 50 years since its formation. MBCA advocates for a healthy desert environment that nurtures our Morongo Basin’s rural character, cultural wealth, and economic well-being.
A slide presentation featuring highlights of the Morongo Basin Conservation Association’s 50 years of environmental and economic advocacy will run concurrent to the morning reception 9 to 9:30 a.m. This event will conclude by 11 a.m.
As general manager of the Mojave Water Agency, Tom McCarthy oversees the agency’s mission is “to manage the region’s water resources for the common benefit,” and to assist local communities and agencies with water-related issues. He is a civil engineer and geologist with more than 20 years of water management experience in both the public and private sectors. He holds a Master of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Science from The University of Oregon.
