At least 14 people were killed and 17 others injured in a shooting Wednesday morning at a holiday party of county employees at a San Bernardino facility that serves the developmentally disabled. The shooting at the Inland Regional Center, on Waterman Avenue is one of the largest mass shootings in the country and triggered lockdowns at schools, hospitals and neighborhoods, as law enforcement officials searched for the two suspects. Four hours after the 11 a.m. shooting, two suspects, a man and a woman, were killed in a gun battle with police about two miles from the regional center. A third suspect seen fleeing that shootout was later detained; police say the two slain suspects were the only two shooters. Law enforcement identified them as Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. Farook has worked as an environmental health specialist for San Bernardino County for five years. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia where he met, and subsequently married Malik. Authorities are still investigating a possible motive and say it may have involved a workplace dispute. Investigators said a dispute took place at the party and Farook left angry. “There had to be some degree of planning that went into this,” they added. Police continued to search a house in Redlands connected to the suspects. “The information we have is that (the shooters) came prepared … as if they were on a mission,” police said, “They were dressed in assault-style clothing and armed with assault-type rifles and handguns.
In the wake of the shooting in San Bernardino Wednesday, the County Board of Supervisors closed all but the most essential county services today and tomorrow. County offices will re-open Monday, December 7.
