At the National WeTip Conference held in Ontario last week, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was awarded “Sheriff Department of the Year.” WeTip Inc. was founded in 1972 as a national, anonymous crime-reporting resource for citizens, and a tool to aid law enforcement. The toll-free WeTip hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Sheriff-Coroner John McMahon acknowledged “that the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department embraces the efforts of WeTip Inc. and works diligently to investigate tips from those who have information regarding crime, but fear reprisal.” Among the other awards presented during the WeTip Inc. conference were Deputy George Dorta of the Rancho Cucamonga Station, who received the Community Partner Award, Deputy Alex Collins of the Big Bear Station received the Award of Valor, and Detective Jeremiah MacKay, of the Yucaipa Station, who was killed in a shoot-out with Christopher Dorner, was posthumously honored with an Award of Valor.
