At tomorrow’s (Mar 28) 10 a.m. meeting of County Supervisors in San Bernardino, two expected actions will benefit our Morongo Basin.
Among the many items on the consent agenda, supervisors will likely approve a quarter million dollar increase in the law enforcement services contract with Twentynine Palms. The increase and the associated addition of a Sheriff Detective comes in response to law enforcement service levels requested by the city. Also slated for approval is an agreement with Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve for the continued management of sensitive wildlife habitats, education programs, and visitor services at the Morongo Valley preserve.
Traditionally, the Bureau of Land Management managed the preserve, but the BLM terminated its involvement last August. As a National Watchable Wildlife site with regional, national, and international recognition for birdwatching, Big Morongo requires a manager to maintain facilities and grounds, limit visitor use at proper levels, regulate uses in sensitive habitats, and monitor sensitive species throughout the area.
Tomorrow’s meeting will be live-streamed to the video conferencing facility at the Bob Burke Government Center in Joshua Tree where the public may attend and comment.
