SAFETY TIPS FOR JOGGERS

Many people enjoy jogging or running, but if they’re not careful, they can be victimized by criminals. Runners or joggers are often so preoccupied with their run that they are not paying attention to their surroundings or realize what is happening around them. Newlywed Sheriff’s Service Specialist Anita Northcutt offers the following personal safety tips for joggers or runners…
Jog or run with a known companion. Jog or run in a familiar area. Do not jog or run in a dark or secluded area. Do not jog or run after dark. Particularly if jogging or running alone, don’t wear headphones or earbuds. Do not talk on your phone, which is a major distraction. Do not run or jog near bushes which can provide concealment. Vary your route and pattern. Carry a whistle or high-decibel, battery-powered personal alarm device. If followed, get to the nearest residence, open business, or group of people. Carry your motor vehicle or home key with you.
