A rock climber escaped serious injury when he fell in Joshua Tree National Park Monday afternoon. Rescue personnel said the man, identified only as being about 19 or 20 years old, was rock climbing in the Ryan Campground area when he somehow fell about 20 or 30 feet about 1 p.m. Because he was so high up in the rocks, a helicopter from CHP was called in for a hoist rescue. After rescuing the climber off the rocks, he was transferred to a Mercy Air helicopter and taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center with cuts and scrapes.
