The Hi-Desert Water District Board of Directors cut the ribbon to its new wastewater treatment facility Thursday morning. Board members reminded the crowd that it took decades for the sewer project to come to fruition, with the price tag tripling over that time.
Assemblyman Chad Mayes of Yucca Valley said it was “a really big deal” that Yucca Valley finally had a sewer.
County Supervisor Dawn Rowe said the sewer will attract businesses; many companies avoided coming to Yucca Valley because there was no sewer.
Congressman Paul Cook compared Washington, D.C. to a toxic sewer, and said he is now trying to bring a sewer project to the Marine Base in Twentynine Palms.
While the water district cut the ribbon Thursday on the new project, it is not operational yet. In the next few weeks, operational checks will be made to make sure everything is working properly. It’s hoped that the first flush to the sewer will be in November.
