During the California Highway Patrol’s New Year maximum enforcement period, CHP personnel were out in force and aggressively enforcing traffic laws while looking for irresponsible and impaired drivers before they could injure or kill themselves or others. The maximum enforcement period was from 6:01 December 31 through midnight, January 1. Throughout the state, the CHP made 491 arrests, and there were three fatalities. In the Morongo Basin, the CHP made only one arrest for driving under the influence, and there were no fatalities. The CHP said the decrease in collisions and injuries sustained during collisions are the result of aggressive enforcement by many CHP officers.
