Motorists who travel Interstate 15 between Barstow and Baker will be relieved to learn that Caltrans has re-opened two rest areas along the freeway. The Valley Wells rest area north of Baker has been closed since December 14, 2017, due to a well failure. An emergency contract has been approved to dig a new well, which should be functional in a few months. In the meantime, Caltrans has installed portable toilets and repairs have been authorized. The rest area on both sides of the freeway should open as soon as the results of water tests are received. The Clyde V. Kane rest area north of Barstow has also been experiencing water issues. The northbound rest area is now open. A new rest area is under construction on the southbound side and should be open next year.
