‘RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL CODE’ ESTABLISHED FOR CALIFORNIANS

Before COVID-19 kept us homebound, tourism spending in San Bernardino County was at an all-time high of $4.9 billion. The pandemic has squashed those numbers as we mostly cancel our summer plans, but a new travel code advises Californians who need to roam, how to do so safely. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…

Visit California, a non-profit organization that promotes California tourism, knows how badly residents are aching to travel. Thus, they have created an unofficial travel code to help families and households safely enjoy what is left of summer. Of course, traveling only with people you live with, wearing a face mask and maintaining social distance are vital to slowing the spread of this deadly virus. The California Responsible Travel Code uses the acronym of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. to detail the safety suggestions, such as:

  • Roam Responsibly – Explore California thoughtfully and responsibly, maintaining the utmost respect for everyone and everything.
  • Education – Research before traveling across the state, and get familiar with local regulations and community concerns, especially in rural communities with limited healthcare resources.
  • Safety First – Follow public health directives from government officials and take steps to minimize health risks to yourself and others. If sick, stay home.
  • Preservation – Protect outdoor spaces and cultural icons. Maintaining a light footprint and take care with delicate ecosystems.
  • Embrace Community – Support local businesses to ensure their survival.
  • Celebrate Culture – Immerse yourself diverse local cultures and embrace those traditions and practices.
  • Teach Others. Lead by example.
