REP. COOK VOTES FOR TAX REFORM

Rep. Paul Cook joined fellow Republicans this week in voting for the final version of HR1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which passed the House of Representatives 227-203.

Cook explained his vote by saying that the new law will provide crucial tax relief for middle-class and low-income Americans. “Despite the misinformation being spread,” he said, the bill “will provide more than 909 percent of taxpayers in my district with a tax break putting more money in their pockets. Money in their pockets means better retirement savings, a better shot at a down payment for home and more money in local economies rather than federal coffers.”

However, tax experts argue that the cuts for individuals expire in 2025, and that most Americans will pay more in taxes within a few years while the cuts are being phased out. Democrats contend the tax bill is a give-away to corporations and political donors, since the tax cuts are permanent for businesses.

President Trump signed the bill into law on Friday.
