Nolan D. Lockwood (Age 84) of Twentynine Palms passed away on Dec. 31, 2022.
Nolan was born on March 24, 1938, in Redlands, Calif., to Harold and Mildred (Maddux) Lockwood and he lived in Yucaipa, Calif., from March, 1938, until September, 1961. His parents’ owned a hardware and appliance businesses in Yucaipa and he enjoyed helping in the business from the time he could see over a counter.
He graduated from Redlands High School in 1956 and continued his education by earning his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Redlands in 1960. He then completed his California Teaching Credential at California State College, Long Beach, in 1961 and accepted a teaching position at Twentynine Palms High School in September, 1961. His education continued at Northern Arizona University where he was awarded a Master of Science degree in mathematics.
He taught at Twentynine Palms High School for 37 years, retiring in 1998. He taught all levels of mathematics and also served as the school’s Activities Director and Student Government Adviser, positions he truly loved. During this time he also taught mathematics courses after school and evenings at what is now Copper Mountain College.
After retiring, Nolan did volunteer work at the 29 Palms Historical Society Old Schoolhouse Museum and Hi-Desert Division of the California Retired Teachers Association. He served on the Board of Directors of both organizations. During summers Nolan also enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states but especially enjoying Jackson Hole, Wyoming, South Lake Tahoe, California, as well as Hawaii and Alaska.
