Reach Out Morongo Basin was awarded a $5000 grant to help residents during widespread power outages and natural disasters from Southern California Edison and Edison International. The Emergency Preparedness and Response grant from Southern California Edison will help Reach Out open the Twentynine Palms Senior Center as an emergency cooling center, provide support to seniors and the disabled during planned and unplanned power outages, and raise community awareness about being prepared in the event of natural disasters. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains how Edison International’s grant will help local residents…
Edison International also contributed toward Reach Out Morongo Basin’s $5,000 grant; its funds will be used to purchase supplies, provide training for staff and volunteers to check on vulnerable senior and disabled neighbors in event of disaster and to hold an Emergency Preparedness and Response Expo for the community in May 2017. Executive director Robin Schlosser said, “Providing support to senior and disabled shut-ins who may be alone during disaster or assisting by providing transportation to the Twentynine Palms Senior Center in event of outages for clients who require medical equipment to sustain life or during extremes of temperatures is a real necessity in our rural community.” If you are a senior who would like to be on Reach Out’s emergency support list, or would like to volunteer, call Reach Out Morongo Basin at 760-361-1410.
