Reach Out Morongo Basin executive director Robin Schlosser recently returned from the three-day United State of Women Summit in Washington, D.C. The first-ever summit was convened by the White House to address issues of gender equality for women and girls, and people from all over the world attended. Among the speakers were President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, along with Oprah Winfrey and Vice President Joe Biden. Managing editor Tami Roleff spoke with Schlosser over the phone and has more about the summit and Schlosser’s experiences…
“Being invited to the United State of Women Summit was an incredible honor for me and was undoubtedly the most inspiring day of my life.” Reach Out Morongo Basin Executive Director Robin Schlosser said it was a phenomenal experience to be in a room with 5,000 women and men who all wanted to better the lives of women and girls. Schlosser attended a break-out session on caregiving in the 21st century.
“Caregiving is going to be absolutely explosive and a huge issue in the coming years with our aging population and also because we have so many members of the military who have returned from overseas with injuries, and the burden of caregiving is falling on their spouses and on their family members. We need more funding, more respite care, training, and counseling. Caregiving will affect every family everywhere.”
Schlosser said she learned so much at the summit. “One of the points that really, really stuck with me was that in order for women to become more equal in this world, we really need to have men as our allies…. We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go.”
