The exceedingly dry desert environment we live in makes us targets for flash floods, which can strike with little or no warning, turning a wash into a rampaging torrent that can overtake roads in minutes. Keep alert for signs of heavy rain while driving. Do not attempt to cross flowing water or flooded areas in your vehicle. Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Turnaround, don’t drown! A flash flood watch means it is possible that rains will cause flash flooding in the specified area. Be alert and prepared for a flood emergency. A flash flood warning means flash flooding is occurring or is imminent in the specified area. Move to safe ground immediately.
