RAIN BRINGS POWER OUTAGES, FLOODING, ROAD CLOSURES AND SOME DAMAGE

The Morongo Basin region was buffeted over the weekend with a string of squalls and thunderstorms which brought heavy rains and flooding, and has closed Highway 62 east of Twentynine Palms. Saturday, one trained weather observer in the Knottā€™s Sky Park area of Twentynine Palms reported 1.2 inches of rain fell in just one hour. There were reports of flooding and minor damage in some homes near the Twentynine Palms Golf course and in Wonder Valley. Twentynine Palms City officials closed the flood wash gates as water was flowing some three feet high in the wash. Power outages were reported in areas of north Joshua Tree and Landers Saturday. Most power was restored by Sunday morning.
Heavy rain east of Twentynine Palms closed State Route 62 at about Mile Marker 35, and it remains closed at Godwin Road as CalTrans crews work to repair the road and washed-out shoulders. A big rig was also reported to have been stuck in the mud at Ironage Road.
Brief, but heavy rains also caused some damage and flooding in north Joshua Tree, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley and Pioneertown.
