On Monday, January 18, Joshua Tree National Park will join in commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contribution to civil rights in this country, by waiving entrance fees to the park. Fees for activities such as camping, reservations, tours, or concessions will still be collected as normal. January 18 will be the first, fee-free day of the National Park Service’s centennial year. As part of the celebration of the park service’s 100th birthday, Joshua Tree National Park has a special exhibit of quilts depicting our nation’s parks. Joshua Tree National Park is announcing the opening of the “National Parks in Quilts!” exhibit. The exhibit features thirteen art quilts created to celebrate the Centennial of the National Park Service. On Friday, January 15, there will be a reception to mark the opening of the quilt exhibit. The exhibit is comprised of 13 quilts designed and constructed to celebrate the 100th Year Birthday of the National Park Service. Joshua Tree National Park was one of only 13 parks to host the exhibit on its yearlong tour of the country. Members of the local quilting guild will be on hand and there will also be remarks by park superintendent, David Smith. The reception will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center in Joshua Tree and is open to the public. The quilts can be seen until January 27th.
