PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT ON NEW WATER RATES FOR THE LANDERS AREA

When directors of the Bighorn Desert View Water Agency meet at 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, April 13), they’ll be looking at water rates and listening to ratepayers. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz with the details on tonight’s meeting and public hearing…

Back in February, residents of Landers and Flamingo Heights served by the Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency received notice the water district was looking at changing rates. For the heaviest water users, the board is looking to increase basic service charges and redo the rate structure by linking water consumption rates to specific customer classes. Those whose primary use of water is agricultural are expected to pay the highest rates by far. Those who use the least amount of water are expected to see their bills go down if the new plan is instituted. Tonight’s public hearing gives ratepayers an opportunity to speak out on the proposed rates. Whatever the board decides, it is expected to be bundled in a five-year plan.
