PUBLIC CONFRONTS HI-DESERT WATER BOARD OVER DIRECTOR’S FACEBOOK POSTS

The Hi-Desert Water District held a Board meeting yesterday, and reporter Joshua King has the details…

In yesterday’s Hi-District Water District meeting, the agenda was primarily focused on passing a handful of resolutions. However, the meeting began with a public comment from two community members who voiced concerns over multiple racist Facebook posts that were made by Director Sarann Graham. The first post in question suggested a “solution to Black Lives Matter” by “giving them Mars.” Graham also posted on Facebook that “English should be the only language in the USA.” The board said they will “consider the public comments sometime in the future.” Graham publicly apologized at the end of the meeting, stating that she has “never been known to be a racist” and her issues lie with the Black Lives Matter movement for not opposing rioters.

Hi-Desert Water District board member Sarann Graham posted this comment on her Facebook page. She has since deleted it.

This was also the second consecutive meeting in which every member of the board, excluding President Roger Mayes, was both maskless and not socially distanced from one another, although the dais has plexiglass barriers between the board members.

The resolution to change sewer assessment levies for some parcels that have experienced a change in use was passed unanimously. Another resolution was passed declaring Director Jim Byerrum and CFO Jonathan Abadesco as signatories for the District’s bank accounts. Finally, the board voted to declare five vehicles as surplus property in order to sell them.
